Propylene R1270

Applications of Propylene
Propylene is extremely versatile, with its downstream products covering synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubbers, fine chemicals, and many other fields. The main application areas are as follows:
1. Polypropylene (Approx. 60%–70% of global propylene consumption)
This is the largest consumer segment for propylene. Polypropylene is a high-performance thermoplastic, primarily used for:
Injection Molding Products: Automotive parts (bumpers, dashboards), household appliance housings (washing machines, air conditioners), containers (crates, trash bins), medical devices (syringes).
Films: Food packaging bags, clothing/electronics packaging films, capacitor films.
Fibers: Non-woven fabrics (face masks, diapers, wet wipes), carpet backing, ropes, woven bags (for rice, fertilizer).
Pipes and Sheets: Hot/cold water pipes for home renovation, corrosion-resistant chemical pipes, stationery.
2. Acrylonitrile
Used to produce:
Acrylic Fibers: Commonly known as "synthetic wool," used for sweaters, blankets, faux fur.
ABS Resin: High-strength engineering plastic used for LEGO bricks, car grilles, appliance housings.
Nitrile Rubber: Excellent oil resistance, used for seals, gloves, oil delivery hoses.
Adiponitrile: Used to produce Nylon 66 (high-grade engineering plastics and fibers).
3. Propylene Oxide (PO)
Primarily used to produce:
Polyether Polyols: Which in turn produce polyurethane flexible foams (mattresses, sofas, car seats) and rigid foams (refrigerator/freezer insulation layers).
Propylene Glycol: Used as a humectant in food/cosmetics, pharmaceutical excipients, antifreeze, unsaturated polyester resins (for fiberglass, bathtubs).
4. Acrylic Acid and Acrylates
Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP): The core absorbent material in baby diapers and adult incontinence products.
Coatings and Adhesives: Water-based architectural coatings, pressure-sensitive adhesives (packaging tape, labels), textile sizing agents, leather treatment agents.
5. Cumene (for producing Phenol/Acetone)
Phenol: Used to produce phenolic resins (electrical sockets, pan handles), Bisphenol A (which in turn produces polycarbonate and epoxy resins).
Acetone: Used as a solvent (cleaning agents, nail polish remover) and to produce methyl methacrylate (acrylic glass/Plexiglas).

6. Isopropanol (Isopropyl Alcohol)
Industrial Solvent: Used in inks, coatings, electronic component cleaning.
Disinfectant: A primary ingredient in most hand sanitizers and surface disinfectant wipes/sprays.
Antifreeze: Used in automotive windshield washer fluid.
7. Oxo Alcohols (Butanol, Octanol)
Primarily used to produce plasticizers (e.g., Dioctyl Phthalate – DOP). These plasticizers make PVC (polyvinyl chloride) flexible, allowing it to be used for wire/cable sheathing, artificial leather, and agricultural films.
Summary: Propylene and Everyday Life
Look around you - propylene derivatives are everywhere:
In your car: Plastic dashboard, seat foam, and carpeting all originate from propylene.
In the office/home: Binder covers, water bottles (polypropylene), wall paints all contain propylene derivatives.
Personal care: Face mask non-woven fabrics, the absorbent layer in diapers, alcohol wipes are all directly related to propylene.
