Advantages of Ethane

Ethane R170

Efficient energy source: Ethane provides a high energy yield when burned, making it an efficient fuel for heating and power generation. It burns cleanly, reducing environmental pollution.

Versatile chemical feedstock: Ethane serves as a versatile feedstock in the petrochemical industry. It can be converted into various valuable chemicals like ethylene, which is used to make a wide range of products.

Low environmental impact: Ethane combustion produces fewer pollutants compared to other hydrocarbons. It emits less carbon monoxide and particulate matter, contributing to cleaner air.

Cost-effective: Ethane is abundant and relatively inexpensive to produce. Its availability and cost-effectiveness make it a practical choice for industrial applications.

Reliable refrigerant: Ethane’s low boiling point makes it an effective refrigerant in cryogenic systems. It enables efficient cooling in scientific and industrial processes.

Supports industrial processes: Ethane supports various industrial processes, including welding and metal cutting. Its high combustion heat enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of these applications.

Properties of Ethane

Physical properties of ethane gas: Ethane is an extremely volatile gas with a boiling point of -88.5℃ and a melting point of -172.0℃. It is an inert gas and does not undergo chemical reactions at normal temperature and pressure. The density of ethane is about 1.04 times that of air, and it tends to gather in low-lying areas to form flammable and explosive gas clusters.

Chemical properties of ethane gas: Ethane is a non-polar molecule with a low affinity for water and can react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. In the absence of oxygen, ethane burns in the air, emitting a bright blue flame and releasing a large amount of heat energy.

Use of Ethane

01

Industrial field

Ethane is one of the most basic hydrocarbons in industry. It is widely used in chemical, petrochemical, refrigeration and other fields. It is the raw material for synthesizing important organic chemicals such as ethylene, ethylene glycol, acetic acid, etc.

02

Medical field

Ethane is one of the most widely used anesthetics today. It is often used for analgesia in short-term surgical operations and treatments. Its anesthetic effect is rapid, short-lasting, and has little effect on the cardiovascular system.

03

Scientific field

Ethane is also widely used in scientific experiments, such as in liquid nitrogen and liquid nitrogen refrigeration, non-polar reagents and non-volatile solvents.

General Methods of Preparation of Ethane

Small amounts of ethane are found in natural gas. However, it should be noted that compared to the main constituent of natural gas, namely methane, ethane constitutes only about 1% of it. Ethane also accompanies oil deposits. Other sources of ethane include biomass pyrolysis products and biogas generated in specifically designed anaerobic digesters. On an industrial scale, it is also extracted by steam cracking, refining and other crude oil processing.

On a larger scale, ethane is obtained as a product of thermal processing of crude oil and coal. On a laboratory scale, the compound can be obtained by electrolysis reaction of a concentrated sodium acetate solution. In addition to ethane, the reaction also produces carbon dioxide. Another method used frequently is catalytic hydrogenation of ethene (a representative of alkenes). In this process, a hydrogen molecule is attached to the unsaturated double bond shared by carbon atoms. Under normal conditions, the reaction is not very efficient, so ethene hydrogenation processes are carried out in the presence of a platinum catalyst.

Safety Guidelines for Using Ethane

When handling 99.9% ethane gas, safety considerations are paramount. While ethane is generally considered low in toxicity, it is essential to manage its storage and usage carefully. Ethane is flammable and can pose explosion risks in confined spaces or high concentrations. Appropriate ventilation, leak detection systems, and adherence to safety protocols are crucial in environments where ethane is utilized.

Professionals in the chemical and industrial gas industries must be aware of regulatory standards governing the use of 99.9% ethane gas. Compliance with local and international regulations ensures safe handling and minimizes environmental impacts. This includes understanding the proper labeling, transportation, and disposal practices associated with ethane gas.

FAQ

Q: What is the main use of ethane?

A: Ethane is mainly used to produce ethylene, a feedstock to make plastics. Ethane is mainly used to produce ethylene, which is then used by the petrochemical industry to produce a range of intermediate products, most of which are converted into plastics.

Q: How do you get ethane?

A: On a larger scale, ethane is obtained as a product of thermal processing of crude oil and coal. On a laboratory scale, the compound can be obtained by electrolysis reaction of a concentrated sodium acetate solution. In addition to ethane, the reaction also produces carbon dioxide.

Q: What is the difference between ethane and ethane?

A: Ethane is an alkane and is saturated. If a compound is saturated, it means all the bonds in the compound are single bonds. Ethene is an alkene and is unsaturated because it contains carbon-carbon double bonds.

Q: What is the natural source of ethane?

A: Ethane is a natural gas that is found abundantly in nature. Being a greenhouse gas it is found in fossil fuels. In the composition of natural gas, it is found in 5 – 10% concentration. Ethane is an important constituent of natural gas and a primary gaseous fuel in the petrochemical industry.

Q: Why is ethane not used for welding?

A: If ethyne is burnt in oxygen, it gives a clean flame with high temperature ( 3000 ∘ C ) due to the complete combustion of ethyne.

Q: Is ethane more acidic than water?

A: The order of acidic nature would be: water > ethyne > ammonia > ethane. Since oxygen has highest electronegativity amongst the atoms of the compounds, so its hydrogen will be most acidic and hence will be best acid among them.
