Molecular Structure of Propylene
I. Core Foreign Trade Specifications (for Customs Declaration & Ocean Shipment)
CAS No.: 115-07-1
UN Number: UN1077, Hazard Class: Class 2.1 Flammable Gas
EINECS No.: 204-062-1
HS Code: 2901220000 (Liquefied Propylene)
Purity: Industrial Grade ≥99.5%; Polymer Grade ≥99.9%
II. Physical & Chemical Properties
Physical Parameters
Appearance: Colorless gas at ambient temperature with faint petroleum sweet odor; liquefies under pressurization or low temperature
Molecular Weight: 42.08
Melting Point: -185°C; Boiling Point: -47.7°C
Liquid Density (20℃): 513.9 kg/m³; Vapor Density: 1.905 kg/m³ (heavier than air)
Flash Point: -108°C; Autoignition Temperature: 455~460°C
Explosion Limit (by volume): 2%~11.1% (high risk of flammability and explosion)
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether and hydrocarbon solvents
Chemical Properties
Contains carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) with high chemical reactivity; capable of addition, polymerization, oxidation, ammoxidation and oxo-synthesis reactions. It is a core petrochemical feedstock, second only to ethylene in industrial importance.

III. Major Downstream Applications (Sorted by Consumption Volume)
Polypropylene (PP, over 60% of total propylene consumption): woven plastic sacks, injection-molded parts, nonwoven fabrics, automotive modified plastics, BOPP films, disposable food containers
Propylene Oxide (PO): polyether polyols (for PU foaming), propylene glycol, antifreeze, nonionic surfactants
Acrylonitrile (AN): acrylic fiber, ABS resin, nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)
Butanol & 2-Ethylhexanol: plasticizers for coatings, acrylate esters, pharmaceutical intermediates
Isopropanol, Acetone, Acrylic Acid, EPDM: solvents, synthetic resins and rubber products
IV. Production Sources
By-product from naphtha cracking in ethylene plants (dominant global route)
Propane Dehydrogenation (PDH, newly dominant domestic process)
By-product from FCC fluid catalytic cracking in refineries
Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO)
V. Storage, Transportation & Hazard Safety (International Logistics)
1. Packaging & Shipment
Bulk cargo: stored & transported via cryogenic pressurized spherical tanks, LPG tank trucks and LPG carriers; small lots: high-pressure steel cylinders (Packing Group O52)
Ocean transport: loaded in IG tanks on liquefied gas carriers, classified as Class 2.1 dangerous goods
2. Safety Hazards
Highly flammable and explosive; vapors sink and accumulate in low-lying areas with potential flashback from distant ignition sources; keep away from open flame, static electricity and oxidizing agents.
Health hazard: high-concentration inhalation causes narcosis and asphyxiation; liquid propylene leads to cryogenic frostbite upon skin contact.
Storage requirement: cool & ventilated spherical tank yard equipped with combustible gas detectors and sprinkler fire-fighting system; isolate from oxygen and strong oxidants.
VI. Trade Remarks
Futures trading: Listed product on Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), key petrochemical futures variety in China; spot market quotes split into Polymer Grade (exclusively for PP production) and Industrial Grade.
