Advantages of N-Pentadecane
N-pentadecane's high latent heat (around 168 kj/kg) and low melting point (8-10°c) make it an effective phase change material, particularly for cooling applications. These properties allow n-pentadecane to store and release thermal energy efficiently during phase transitions (solid to liquid and vice versa), making it suitable for thermal energy storage systems.
N-pentadecane can be successfully microencapsulated within materials like poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) shells, further enhancing its potential for thermal energy storage applications.

Use of N-Pentadecane

Pentadecane is a linear alkane with high latent heat (~168 kJ/kg) and low melting point. These properties make it an ideal candidate as a phase change material (PCM) for cooling applications.
Pentadecane is produced by isolation of n-paraffins (C9–C17) from kerosene and gas oil fractions of crude oil by selective adsorption and fractional distillation. It is used in organic synthesis and as solvent. N-Pentadecane is used in preparation method of Graphene/Alkane composite coating for Aluminum Alloy plate belt.


Petroleum fractionation method: Petroleum is an important source of alkane compounds in nature. Through the fractionation process of petroleum, different hydrocarbon compounds can be separated according to the difference in boiling points. As part of the petroleum fraction, n-Pentadecane can be extracted from petroleum through precise fractionation technology. This method has the advantages of abundant raw materials, mature technology and low cost, and is currently the main way to obtain n-Pentadecane in industry.
Fischer-Tropsch synthesis: Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is a chemical process that converts carbon monoxide and hydrogen into hydrocarbon compounds under the action of a catalyst. By adjusting the reaction conditions and the type of catalyst, the carbon chain length of the product can be controlled to obtain alkanes with different carbon numbers, including n-pentadecane. The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis has the advantages of a wide range of raw material sources (such as coal, natural gas, etc.) and a variety of product types, but the reaction conditions are relatively harsh and the product distribution is wide, requiring further separation and purification.
Petroleum crude oil (UN1267) may contain TOXIC hydrogen sulphide gas. Inhalation or contact with material may irritate or burn skin and eyes. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Vapors may cause dizziness or asphyxiation, especially when in closed or confined areas. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause environmental contamination.
Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as N-PENTADECANE, may be incompatible with strong oxidizing agents like nitric acid. Charring of the hydrocarbon may occur followed by ignition of unreacted hydrocarbon and other nearby combustibles. In other settings, aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons are mostly unreactive. They are not affected by aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, most oxidizing agents, and most reducing agents. When heated sufficiently or when ignited in the presence of air, oxygen or strong oxidizing agents, they burn exothermically to produce carbon dioxide and water.
