Propylene R1270

Propylene is one of the most important basic raw materials in the petrochemical industry and is ubiquitous in our daily lives - from plastic products and packaging materials to automobile bumpers, medical devices, clothing, and coatings. It is also the second most produced olefin after ethylene.
Here is a quick overview of its key characteristics in the following table:
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Basic Information | Chemical formula: C₃H₆; English name: Propylene/Propene; Colorless gas at room temperature with a mild hydrocarbon-like odor. |
| Key Physicochemical Parameters | Boiling point: approx. -47.6°C; Melting point: approx. -185°C; Explosion limit in air: 2%–11% (by volume); Flammable gas. |
| Major Hazards | Extremely flammable; the gas is heavier than air, will spread along the ground upon leakage, and poses a flashback risk near ignition sources. Liquid propylene can cause frostbite on skin contact and has mild narcotic effects. |
💎 Main Applications: From Raw Material to End Products
Propylene is a basic building block for the three major synthetic materials (plastics, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers), with a wide range of downstream products.
Polypropylene (approx. 70%): This is the largest downstream product of propylene. Polypropylene is a general-purpose plastic widely used in woven bags, household appliance housings, automobile bumpers, medical devices, etc.
Propylene Oxide (PO): Primarily used to produce polyurethane foams, which are essential for soft foams in sofas, mattresses, car seats, etc.
Acrylonitrile: A core raw material for ABS engineering plastics, acrylic fibers (synthetic wool), and nitrile rubber.
Other Chemicals: Propylene is also used to produce isopropanol (solvent), acetone, acrylic acid (coatings, adhesives), and butanol/octanol (plasticizers), among others.
⚙️ Production Processes: How Propylene is Obtained
Currently, there are four major production routes for propylene globally:
Steam Cracking: A traditional method using naphtha and other feeds, primarily aimed at producing ethylene; propylene is a significant byproduct with a yield of approx. 14%–18%.
Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC): In oil refineries, propylene is produced as a byproduct when heavy oil is converted into gasoline and diesel, with a yield of approx. 3%–8%.
Propane Dehydrogenation (PDH): A rapidly growing mainstream process, specifically designed to produce propylene from propane. Its advantages include high product purity and a yield of up to 85%–90%.
Coal/Methanol-to-Olefins (CTO/MTO): Suitable for countries rich in coal but lacking oil and gas. Propylene is produced from coal-derived methanol.

🚢 Storage, Transport & Safety: Strict Special Requirements
Due to its flammability and extremely low boiling point (-47.6°C), propylene requires special handling for storage and transportation.
Storage Methods: It must be stored under high pressure to maintain it in a liquefied state, or cryogenically (typically below -47°C) for refrigerated liquefied storage, using specialized spherical pressure tanks or cylindrical cryogenic tanks.
Transportation: Long-distance transport uses dedicated pressure tankers (land) and pressure/refrigerated ships (water).
Safety Management: Propylene is classified as a Class 2.1 hazardous chemical, and all operations and emergency responses must follow strict regulations.
