I. Application Fields

1-Butene is an important basic chemical raw material, mainly used in the following fields:

1. Polymer Production (Core Application)

·Polyethylene Comonomer: Copolymerized with ethylene to produce High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE). This is the most important application of 1-butene. In the polyolefin sector, LLDPE is the largest consumption area, accounting for 81.5% of total consumption in 2024.

·Poly-1-butene (PB-1) Pipes: Used in pipes, films, and other applications, with the market size continuing to grow.

2. Chemical Intermediates

·Butadiene Production: Used to produce 1,3-butadiene, which is further used in the production of synthetic rubber.

Sec-butanol (SBA) and Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK): Synthesized through hydration reactions.

·Other Derivatives: Can be used to produce valeraldehyde, n-butanol, lubricant additives, methyl methacrylate (monomer for plexiglass), etc.

3. Other Uses

·Used as a standard gas and for preparing special standard gas mixtures.

·Used in the production of isoprene, synthetic rubber, etc.

II. Demand Structure Changes and Opportunities

Pressure on Traditional Sectors: LLDPE remains the largest consumption area, but under the trend toward high-end applications, the substitution of 1-butene by 1-hexene and 1-octene is accelerating.

Emerging Growth Drivers: Demand for fine chemicals such as poly-1-butene (PB-1) pipes and butanone (MEK) is growing at a rate exceeding 8%.

High-End Transformation: With the development of high-end materials such as Polyolefin Elastomers (POE), the demand for high-purity 1-butene is expected to grow.

III. Main Challenges

Structural Oversupply: Domestic 1-butene is experiencing a structural oversupply, mainly due to the homogenization of comonomer plastic grades.

Raw Material Price Fluctuations: Fluctuations in ethylene prices affect production costs.

Environmental Pressure: Integrated refining and chemical projects need to be equipped with carbon capture technologies. It is estimated that carbon emission intensity will decrease by 15%–20% by 2030 compared to 2026.
