EPS stands for expandable polystyrene foam, widely used in express packaging foam, protective foam packaging and thermal insulation boards. An EPS foaming agent is a physical foaming medium sealed inside EPS plastic beads, which inflates solid plastic beads into lightweight porous foam. It only undergoes a physical phase change from liquid to gas without any chemical reaction.
2. Mainstream EPS Foaming Agent: Pentane (the sole mainstream option in the industry)
Virtually all domestic EPS manufacturers adopt a mixture of n-pentane and isopentane; a small number of outdated processes use butane as an auxiliary component. Freon has been completely phased out.
n-Pentane / Isopentane (C₅H₁₂)
Boiling point around 36°C, highly volatile at ambient temperature. It vaporizes and expands instantly under heating steam at 80–100°C.
During the production of EPS bead raw materials, liquid pentane is pressurized and sealed inside polystyrene pellets, accounting for 3% to 5% of the total weight of beads.
When heated, internal gas pressure expands plastic beads by 40 to 60 times, forming closed honeycomb pores to produce lightweight, shock-absorbent and thermal-insulating foam.
Butane (C₄H₁₀) It was used as an auxiliary foaming material in early years but delivers unstable foaming performance and poor density control of finished products. Today it is only compounded in tiny amounts for low-end EPS and has been largely replaced by pentane.
Obsolete products: CFCs and HCFCs, banned worldwide for ozone layer depletion.

3. Core Two-Step Foaming Mechanism
Production of raw EPS beads Solid PS pellets are formed by polymerizing styrene. Liquid pentane penetrates and is encapsulated inside the pellets under pressure in a reactor, yielding "pentane-containing expandable EPS beads".
Pre-expansion & mould forming High-temperature steam softens PS plastic and rapidly vaporizes the pentane trapped inside beads, causing dramatic volume expansion. Expanded beads are filled into moulds and steamed again to fuse with one another. After cooling, solid EPS foam blocks are formed for express cushioning, packaging foam and construction thermal insulation panels.
4. Key Properties & Safety Notes
Flammability: Both pentane and butane are Class A highly flammable hazardous chemicals. EPS workshops require mandatory ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and strict open flame prohibition.
Environmental merit: Zero ozone depletion potential (ODP=0), far more eco-friendly than legacy freon products.
Most pentane volatilizes gradually after foaming, leaving extremely low residual content in finished foam products.
5. Relevance to the Garment Industry (Continued from Previous Q&A)
EPS foam is commonly applied to garment shockproof packaging, foam liners for apparel and thermal foam interlayers. Pentane foaming agents are consumed at upstream foam manufacturing plants.
Garment factories, printing & dyeing plants and fabric workshops do not purchase pentane or foaming agents directly; they only procure finished foam sheets.
Raw materials for garment fabrics (polyester, polypropylene) derive from ethylene and propylene, belonging to an entirely separate chemical industrial chain from pentane foaming agents.
