Cyclopentane is a colorless liquid with a mild, benzene-like odor. It has a relative density of 0.75 (water = 1); being lighter than water, it floats on the surface. It is miscible with most organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. Its flash point is -37°C (closed cup), meaning it releases enough vapor to ignite at temperatures far below room temperature.
Cyclopentane is currently one of the most mature and widely used physical blowing agents in the rigid polyurethane foam industry, particularly for the insulation layers of refrigerators and freezers.
