Safety Guidelines for Industrial Use of Cyclopentane (C₅H₁₀)
1. Storage & Handling
Ventilation: Store in well-ventilated areas (explosion-proof exhaust systems recommended).
Containers: Use sealed, grounded metal drums/tanks (avoid plastic).
Temperature Control: Keep below 30°C (86°F) – away from heat/sparks.
No Smoking: Strictly enforce in storage/usage zones.
2. Personal Protection (PPE)
Mandatory: Chemical goggles, flame-resistant gloves, and organic vapor respirators (if ventilation is inadequate).
Clothing: Anti-static suits/aprons to prevent ignition.
3. Leak & Spill Response
Evacuate and eliminate ignition sources (electrical switches/static).
Contain spills with inert absorbents (sand, vermiculite) – NEVER use water.
Disposal: Follow local regulations for flammable waste.
4. Fire Safety
Extinguishers: Use CO₂, dry chemical, or foam (Class B fires).
NEVER use water jets (spreads fire).
Special Note: Vapors are heavier than air – monitor floor-level accumulation.
5. First Aid
Inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately; seek medical help if dizzy.
Skin Contact: Wash with soap/water; remove contaminated clothing.
Eye Contact: Rinse with water for 15+ minutes; consult a doctor.
6. Compliance
Labeling: Clearly mark containers with "Flammable Liquid" (UN 1146).
Training: Regular drills for employees on MSDS (SDS) protocols.
