Ethylene R1150

China's Ethylene Export Overview
China's ethylene exports remain minimal in scale, primarily consisting of small trial shipments and inventory-driven releases. However, driven by capacity exits overseas, a structural window is opening for China to expand into regional markets such as South Korea.
Current Export Status
China's ethylene monomer exports have long been at a very low level. In Q1 2026, cumulative exports totaled only 4,475 metric tons, a year-on-year decline of 58.63%. This stands in stark contrast to China's massive domestic output of 20.8 million tons in the first half of 2026.
Key Constraints
Physical limitations: Ethylene is a gas, making long-distance storage and transport impractical. Domestic cracking units are almost entirely integrated with downstream processing facilities.
Limited cost advantage: China's predominantly naphtha-based feedstock structure results in higher costs compared to Middle Eastern ethane cracking (≤$450/ton) and U.S. shale gas routes ($550–700/ton).
Domestic substitution focus: Capacity expansion has been driven by the goal of import substitution rather than large-scale overseas supply.

Breakthrough: First Shipment to South Korea
On June 1, 2026, 5,000 tons of ethylene produced by SINOPEC INEOS (Tianjin) were shipped to South Korea - the first such export through Tianjin Port. The facility, with 1.2 million tons/year capacity, uses imported ethane as feedstock, offering a clear cost edge. The company plans to reach 100,000–150,000 tons/year in exports by 2027, with Japan and Southeast Asia as future targets.
Global Opportunity
Europe, Japan, and South Korea are undergoing significant capacity exits - Europe is projected to permanently lose 4.6 million tons of ethylene capacity by end of 2027, while South Korea plans to cut nearly 6 million tons over five years. This creates an estimated 3.7 million-ton supply gap, opening new market space for Chinese exports.
Outlook
Industry forecasts suggest China could become a net ethylene exporter by 2028, joining the U.S. and the Middle East as a major global supplier. In the near term, however, direct monomer exports will remain limited, with the real growth concentrated in downstream derivatives such as polyethylene (PE), ethylene glycol (EG), and styrene monomer (SM).
