Molecular formula: C2H4; Structural formula: CH2=CH2. It is the simplest olefin containing a carbon-carbon double bond (unsaturated bond).

Appearance: Colourless gas under ambient temperature and pressure

Odour: Faint sweet hydrocarbon odour; high concentrations easily dull the sense of smell

Explosion limit (volume fraction): 2.7%～36%. Extremely wide explosive range; highly flammable gas

Core characteristic: The carbon-carbon double bond readily undergoes addition, polymerisation and oxidation reactions, rendering it much more chemically active than ethane.

2. Industrial Production

Steam cracking of naphtha / ethane (global dominant process) Saturated hydrocarbons are cracked at high temperature () diluted with steam to produce ethylene, propylene, butadiene, pyrolysis gasoline and other by-products.

Ethylene output is a core indicator measuring a country's petrochemical industry development, commonly known as the "Mother of Petrochemicals".

Alternative domestic route: Coal-to-Olefins (MTO/MTP). Ethylene and propylene are produced via methanol cracking, widely adopted in regions rich in coal resources.

VCM Vinyl Chloride Monomer → PVC Polyvinyl Chloride Profiles, pipes, flexible plastics, artificial leather

SM Styrene Monomer → PS Polystyrene, ABS resin

Alpha-olefins, EVA, ethanol, Vinyl Acetate (VAC), etc.
