1-Octadecene is a long-chain alpha-olefin with the chemical formula C₁₈H₃₆ and CAS number 112-88-9. It is colorless liquid or white solid at room temperature.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical parameters: Melting point 17.5-18℃, boiling point 179℃ at 2kPa and 314.2℃ under normal pressure, density 0.789 g/mL at 20℃, flash point 148℃, refractive index 1.4448.
Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in hot propanol, acetone and ethers.
Stability: Flammable. It may burn when exposed to open flame or high heat, and shall be kept away from oxidants.
Synthesis Method
It is mainly prepared by dehydration of stearyl alcohol.Mix stearyl alcohol and acetic anhydride at a molar ratio of 1:1.5, and carry out pyrolysis at 610±10℃ to produce acetic acid and acetic anhydride by-products. Treat the supernatant with potassium hydroxide ethanol solution, extract with n-hexane, then conduct vacuum distillation, and collect the fraction at 195℃ under 4.39kPa to obtain the finished product.

Organic synthesis: Applied to manufacture surfactants, fragrances, medicines, dyes and polymers.Analytical reagent: Used as reference sample for gas chromatography.Nanomaterials: Applied in synthesis of colloidal quantum dots, nanocrystals and nanosheets.Lubricating material: Forms reactive film to reduce surface friction of silicon materials and protect micro devices.

It is also used for environmentally friendly packaging plastics. The annual global consumption exceeds 200,000 tons.
