Cyclohexane is a very important solvent and precursor in the plastics industry.
As a powerful solvent – this is the most direct and widespread application of cyclohexane in plastics processing. It is mainly used as a solvent for non-polar or weakly polar plastics.
Processing of Polystyrene (PS) and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS):
Cyclohexane is an excellent solvent for PS. In the production of EPS (commonly known as "Styrofoam"), cyclohexane is used as a physical blowing agent. Under heating and pressure, PS granules absorb cyclohexane. When injected into a mold and heated, the cyclohexane vaporizes, causing the granules to expand and fuse together, forming a lightweight, porous foam product.
Surface Treatment and Bonding of Plastics:
For some non-polar plastics that are difficult to bond (such as polyethylene PE and polypropylene PP), cyclohexane can slightly dissolve or swell their surfaces, making them rougher and more active. This is often used for:
Surface treatment before bonding to improve the adhesion of adhesives.
Enhancing the adhesion of inks or coatings before plastic printing or coating.
Cleaning and Degreasing of Plastics:
It can be used to remove oil stains, grease, or other non-polar contaminants from the surface of plastic parts.
