Cyclohexane is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor; it has a molecular weight of 84.16 and a relative density (water = 1) of approximately 0.78, making it lighter than water. While insoluble in water, it is miscible with most organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, and acetone. It has a very low flash point (approximately -18°C) and is highly flammable; its auto-ignition temperature is around 245°C.
Cyclohexane is a key raw material for nylon production (its primary application); the vast majority of global cyclohexane output is consumed by this industrial chain, resulting in end products such as textile fibers, automotive parts, and housings for electronic appliances. As a non-polar solvent, cyclohexane dissolves oils, waxes, resins, rubber, and various organic compounds. It is also used as a mobile phase component or sample solvent for the separation of non-polar or weakly polar compounds.
