n-Butane is an important organic compound used primarily as a component of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a fuel, a raw material for organic synthesis, a refrigerant, a solvent, and an aerosol propellant.
Mixed with propane as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), it is widely used for home heating, cooking, and industrial heating. It is also used as a fuel for lighters and portable gas stoves.
It is used to produce butene and butadiene (synthetic rubber raw materials) through catalytic dehydrogenation. It is also used as a refrigerant (as a CFC replacement) and a calibration gas (e.g., for ionization particle counters).
