Isopentane R601a

Isopentane, systematically known as 2-methylbutane, is a colorless, highly volatile, and extremely flammable liquid at room temperature and pressure. It is an isomer of n-pentane and has a wide range of applications in both industry and daily life.
1. Basic Physical and Chemical Properties
Chemical Formula: C₅H₁₂
Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid with a faint, characteristic odor.
Boiling Point: Approximately 27.7°C (Due to its boiling point being close to room temperature, it is highly volatile.)
Solubility: Insoluble in water, but miscible with most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene.
Density: Lighter than water (approx. 0.62 g/cm³).
2. Main Applications
Isopentane is an important chemical raw material and solvent. Common applications include:
Blowing Agent: Widely used in the production of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polyurethane foams as an environmentally friendly physical blowing agent, replacing ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
Refrigerant: Used in specific refrigeration cycles or as a component in refrigerant blends.
Solvent: Serves as an excellent solvent in the rubber, paint, resin, and oil extraction industries.
Gasoline Blending Component: Frequently added to gasoline to improve its anti-knock performance due to its high octane rating.
Laboratory Use: In molecular biology, isopentane is often mixed with chloroform at a 1:24 ratio (or used in related reagents) during DNA/RNA extraction to eliminate foam and facilitate phase separation.
3. Safety and Hazards ⚠️
Isopentane is classified as a highly hazardous substance. Strict safety protocols must be followed during handling:
Extremely Flammable: Its vapor is heavier than air and can travel along the ground to distant ignition sources. It can easily ignite or explode when exposed to open flames, high heat, or static electricity.
Health Hazards:
Inhalation: High concentrations of vapor can cause narcosis and asphyxiation, leading to dizziness, headaches, nausea, or even unconsciousness.
Skin Contact: Rapid evaporation of the liquid can cause frostbite. Prolonged exposure may lead to skin dryness, degreasing, or dermatitis.
Eye Contact: Vapors or liquid can cause severe irritation.
Environmental Hazards: While it does not deplete the ozone layer, it is a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) and has a certain impact on the atmospheric environment.
4. Storage and Transportation Recommendations
Store in a cool, well-ventilated, dedicated warehouse, away from ignition sources and heat.
Warehouse temperatures should not exceed 30°C, and containers must be kept tightly sealed.
Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation systems. Equipment and tools that can generate sparks are strictly prohibited.
Store separately from oxidizing agents and halogens; never store them together.
