Isoprene contains conjugated double bonds and is prone to addition and polymerization reactions. For example, it can generate different products when reacting with halogen elements.
Main applications;
Rubber industry: used to synthesize polyisoprene rubber (natural rubber substitute), and is also a comonomer of butyl rubber and SIS elastomer.
Fine chemicals: used to manufacture pesticides, medicines (such as vitamin A/E intermediates), fragrances and adhesives.
Production and safety
Preparation method: mainly obtained by extraction of C₅ fractions from petroleum cracking, or dehydrogenation of isopentane and organic synthesis.
Hazard: flammable (flash point -54℃), a Class 2B carcinogen, needs to be stored away from light and oxidants.
