n-Octadecane

Octadecane is a straight-chain saturated alkane with the chemical formula C₁₈H₃₈. As an important component of petroleum fractions such as paraffin wax and kerosene, it has extensive applications in industry, materials science, and phase-change energy storage.
Below is a summary of the core information regarding octadecane:
1. Basic Physicochemical Properties
Appearance: Typically a colorless to white waxy solid or crystal at room temperature.
Melting Point: Approximately 28°C (one of its most critical physical properties, as it is close to room temperature).
Boiling Point: Approximately 317°C.
Solubility: Insoluble in water; highly soluble in organic solvents such as ether, chloroform, and benzene.
Density: Approximately 0.777 g/cm³ (at 20°C).
2. Main Application Areas
🔋 Phase Change Materials (PCM)
This is currently the most notable application for octadecane. Because its melting point (~28°C) falls perfectly within the human comfort zone and the operating temperature range of many electronic devices, and due to its high latent heat of fusion (approx. 240–250 J/g), it is widely used as a solid-liquid phase change heat storage material:
Building Energy Efficiency: Blended into gypsum boards, concrete, or wall materials to regulate indoor temperatures and reduce air conditioning energy consumption.
Thermal Management: Used in lithium battery thermal management systems and electronic component cooling to prevent equipment overheating.
Textiles: Encapsulated into microcapsules and embedded into fibers to create "temperature-regulating" smart clothing or bedding.
🏭 Industrial & Chemical Applications
Phase Change Standard: Due to its stable melting point and high purity, it is frequently used as a temperature calibration standard for thermal analysis equipment like Differential Scanning Calorimeters (DSC).
Lubrication & Mold Release: Serves as an additive for premium lubricants, a mold release agent for metal processing, or a lubricant for rubber and plastics.
Chromatographic Analysis: Commonly used as a stationary phase or a standard reference for retention indices in Gas Chromatography (GC).
Daily Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals: Acts as an ointment base, an emulsifier in cosmetics, or a carrier for sustained-release drugs.
3. Safety & Precautions
Flammability: It is a combustible solid. It is highly flammable when exposed to open flames or high heat and must be kept away from ignition sources.
Toxicity: Generally considered to have very low toxicity and causes no obvious skin irritation. However, personal protective equipment is still recommended during industrial handling to avoid inhaling dust or vapors.
Environmental Impact: As a long-chain alkane, it has relatively slow biodegradability. Large-scale direct discharge into water bodies should be avoided.
4. Sources & Preparation
Industrially, it is primarily obtained through the fractional distillation of petroleum fractions and the urea complexation separation process. This process utilizes the property of urea to form crystalline complexes with straight-chain alkanes, allowing for the highly efficient purification of high-purity n-octadecane from complex petroleum fractions.
