Production of Chemical Intermediates: It serves as a feedstock for producing isobutylene, propylene, methacrylic acid, and other basic chemical intermediates. It is also used in the production of high-value chemicals such as propylene oxide and tert-butanol.
Solvent and Blowing Agent: In the plastics industry, isobutane can act as a solvent (e.g., in the slurry process for producing high-density polyethylene) or as a blowing agent for foam plastics like polyurethane.
Propellant (Aerosol): It is commonly used as a propellant in aerosol products such as hairsprays and air fresheners to expel the product from the container.
Standard Reference Gas: High-purity isobutane can be used to prepare standard gas mixtures for calibrating detection instruments, or as a reagent gas in chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CI-MS).
