As a non-polar solvent, n-Heptane is widely used in industrial cleaning agents, diluents (paints, rubber, printing), as a mobile phase in laboratory chromatography, and as an extractant. It is also used as a reference fuel for determining the octane number of gasoline.
N-Heptane is used as a chemical raw material, cracked to produce ethylene/propylene and oxidized to produce heptanoic acid/heptan. It is also used as an anesthetic, a specialty fuel, and a standard for spectral analysis.
